Like many other sites these days, most of the action at Golden
Palace Poker seems to spread between Texas Hold’em and Omaha (high and
high/low). They also offer 5 Card and 7 Card Stud as well, but action at
those tables is very limited at stakes above $0.50/$1.00. Golden Palace
Poker is now one of the larger poker rooms with 25,000 plus players at
peak times, so there is plenty of action at the Hold’em tables. You can
get your Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo fix, too, but only if you play Pot Limit
- Fixed Limit Omaha is pretty much non-existent. Much of the play in the
Texas Hold’em games is at the short handed 6-max tables at the lower
stakes; full ring games (10-player) can be found more easily at peak
times.
Sit-and-Go tournaments are plentiful, but they aren’t the greatest for
the tight player, as blinds tend to escalate fairly quickly (the 2,000
starting chip stack is deceiving). The time for each level is not too
short (8 minutes), but the blinds take rather large jumps in every
level. Golden Palace Poker has added “extended” tournaments with 12
minute levels, which may work better for some people.
Golden Palace Poker’s Multi-Table tournaments have everything covered:
low stakes, high stakes, bonus point freerolls, re-buy, freezeout – they
have it all.
They offer ‘Beginners Tables’ for all of their games with stakes as low
as $0.01/$0.02. These games are extremely popular and you may have to
wait for a seat at any time of day.
You can also find plenty of Heads Up action with stakes from $0.25/$0.50
up to $25/$50. All their games, Hold'em, Omaha and Stud, are available
in this format as well.
Golden Palace Poker typically offers a first deposit bonus of 25% up to
$100 with reload bonuses every so often, particularly if you haven’t
played there in a while.
This site is definitely one for the cash game players out there. If
you like tournaments that have more than one entrant, this is not the
site for you.
Golden Palace Customer and Technical Support
On each table you have a “call manager” button which gives you instant
access to live chat. This was tested on two occasions and both times I
was talking to somebody within a matter of seconds.
Likewise their email support is just as impressive. An answer was
received within 10 minutes that was both friendly and helpful, and did
not appear to be a “canned reply”.
They also offer telephone support that again answered within a few rings
and were very helpful.
This site has absolutely superb support, and it cannot be faulted in any
way. They have clearly invested heavily in this area and all other sites
could look here for inspiration.
Golden Palace Ease of Game, Ease of Making Money, Fish Rating
GoldenPalace is abundant with fish, especially at the lower limits.
Being more famous for their casino, there are a lot of casino players
who “want a go at this poker thing”. The site has even decided not to
have a “flop percentage” view in order to give the fish an easier time,
but there are still plenty to be found without too much hunting.
Multitabling options
Players are allowed to play up to 4 tables at one time.
Chat options
An adjacent chat box automatically appears next to the table. It
displays a dealer play-by-play of hands that you can turn off if you
desire. You do have the option to ignore the chat of other players. In
addition, there is a general lobby chat that any logged-on player can
use.
Pre-select actions
For limit games, typical fold, call, and raise buttons are present. For
no limit games, fold and call are the actions you can select before your
turn.
Hand History
A listing of previous hands is available from the lobby or any table.
Both tournament hands and cash game hands are displayed.
Stats
Individual stats are available from the lobby or the table. Pre-flop and
post-flop stats are displayed.

GoldenPalace is part of the Golden Palace Casino group. It therefore
attracts a lot of casino players to its poker tables which is always a good
thing - as this means more fish than usual at poker only or poker centric
sites. The online poker industry aggressively markets customers through
different media.

Some poker rooms continue to grow and some do not. It is no surprise that
Golden Palace Poker, with its unique advertising campaign, is one that
continues to grow its player base. From superb software to an array of
tournament offerings, Golden Palace is making quite an impression in the
world of online poker. Part of the Tribeca network, it shares the software
design with other poker rooms such as Doyles Room. It is a highly praised
design; creative and sophisticated, and includes a number of options to
customize your poker adventure. The tables range from micro-limit right up
to high limit $150/300. Action is concentrated at the hold 'em tables with a
majority playing in ring games. Additionally, they now offer 7 Card Stud.
Customer service and support is accessible by telephone, email, through the
floor manager chat option that is located in the lobby, and also at the
tables. A standout feature is the buddy list that will notify you of friends
currently playing using an information 'ticker' at the bottom of the screen.
As an added inducement to play there, Action Points are awarded to players
who contribute to a pot on a pro-rate (percentage) basis. Action Points can
be used for tournament entries and the purchase gift certificates.
Golden Palace is one of the world’s largest and most famous online casinos,
ensuring a large growing poker user base and the support and backing of a
big organization. Golden Palace is also well known for their unique
marketing tactics - ie - Golden Palace painted on the back of championship
boxers, such as Bernard Hopkins during his title fight against Felix
Trinidad.
Golden Palace Poker is part of the Tribeca Poker Network, which includes
such sites as Victor Chandler Poker and Doyle's Room. This network also
feeds into the player base. The finance side of the poker room is handled by
Best Pay Finance, which as you would expect is a huge and well established
company. All of the usual deposit and withdrawal options are available
including Neteller, Debit/Credit Card, Citadel, Firepay, eWallet Xpress and
Moneybookers. One thing to note however is that the options to withdraw are
not the same as those to deposit. You cannot withdraw to a debit/credit card
for example, and bank wires have fairly hefty fees. You can ask for a
cheque, but unless you pay $35 for Fedex delivery, expect to wait up to 6
weeks for this to arrive. You really need a Neteller or equivalent account
if you are going to be cashing out regularlyBeginners to the game can take
comfort in knowing that support personnel are just a click away no matter
where you are within the Golden Palace software. The micro-limit tables are
a good place to start if you are in search of some loose competition to test
the state of your game. If you wish to assess your tournament play, Golden
Palace runs many low buy-in multi-table tournaments and their single-table
tournaments fill up fast, especially at the lower amounts. Intermediate and
advanced players who specialize in cash games will encounter a complete and
entertaining poker package. Tables are full at all hours of the day, and
even though loose tables may be difficult to find from the lobby display,
they are there. The ability to set up private tables is a feature that many
players enjoy and it is available at Golden Palace.

The GoldenPalace software is extremely good. It’s very fast, has just about
every function you could ask for, and is very well thought out. Something
that more experienced poker players will immediately spot though is the lack
of a “flop percentage” display on the table listings. It has been stated by
the poker room that this is specifically done in order to give newer players
an easier time by making it harder to find weak tables. So although this
makes it a bit harder for sharks, on the other hand it results in attracting
more fish – and if it’s harder for you to find them, it’s the same for the
other good players out there too. Still this said, you will not have that
hard a time finding a weak table with plenty of fish on.
The table view, with its usual 4 colour deck option and chat features, is
very nicely laid out. You can display user avatars if you wish, or these can
be disabled for an even neater view. The cards are nice, large and clear,
and the animations are useful rather than annoying (for example when making
a bet, the amount wagered grows in size and then shrinks to draw attention
to it). The animations that are in place are very fast – for example when
the cards are dealt, so you will find yourself playing more hands per hour
than at other sites.
Overall, the table view is probably one of the most well thought out that
there is. There are no silly gimmicks, but on the other hand it is not plain
and boring either. The authors of the software have clearly taken on board
comments from experienced online players and incorporated them. In fact they
make a point of it – every table you sit on has a “make a suggestion” link
in the bottom corner. Click on this, and instantly tell the site about any
thoughts you have which could make the table even nicer – a feature which
has clearly been well used and well implemented.
Unfortunately there is no “mini view” option on this site, which means in
order to play any more than one table (you can play up to a maximum of 4)
without overlap you need to be running at a screen resolution of at least
1600x1200.
Support for “other” poker games is not great – they offer only Holdem,
Omaha, and Omaha H/L.

Golden Palace Poker Room Action
The action at GoldenPalace is good. The bulk of the players will be found on
the Holdem cash games, although there is some limited tournament action as
well.
There are plenty of full tables, and plenty of nearly full tables for you to
take a seat at, from the micro limits all the way up to the maximum limits.
The site was tested both during the day and at night and there were always
plenty of games going on with plenty of players.
SNG tournaments fill up fairly quickly, but at higher levels you may have to
wait a while to get some company. It seems that people are shy to be the
first to sit down at a table on this site, which can probably be attributed
to the fact that many of them will be playing their first tournament. So,
sit on an empty table, open a can of fish food, and wait for them to arrive.
But put the kettle on whilst you’re doing this as it can sometimes take a
few minutes for everyone to take their seats. Golden Palace's software is
one of their highlights. It starts with a nice display and play moves along
very quickly. The lobby chat is very active, but you can choose to bypass
this. The only table statistic indicated is average pot size. The table view
is nicely laid out and although there are a few animations to help liven up
the display, these do not slow down the speed of play. Player options
include avatars and a 4-color deck. The buddy list works very well and is
easy to use.
Multi table tournaments seem particularly quiet on Golden Palace. Even the
freerolls don’t get that busy in relation to the number of users, but the
prizes they offer are fairly poor ($2 prize pool for 300 players). But it is
free, so what do you expect! They do have larger freerolls aswell, so keep
an eye out for them. For the paid tournaments, over the course of several
hours and several tournament registrations coming and going, nobody other
than me registered. This was on tournaments ranging from $2 to $10 entry.
Golden Palace Poker began as an offshoot of GoldenPalace.com, one of the
most visible online casinos, which has been in existence since 1997. The
folks at Golden Palace Poker are famous (or shall we say notorious?) for
their marketing techniques: they have been known to plaster their logo on
athletes and to purchase bizarre items (such as a grilled cheese sandwich
displaying the face of the Virgin Mary!) all with the goal of spreading the
Golden Palace name.
Golden Palace Poker is now on the iPoker network, so if you are familiar
with sites on that network (such as Titan Poker) you will become accustomed
to Golden Palace in no time. It is a medium to large network supporting
around 25k total players at peak times.
Golden Palace Poker Game Types:
Note taking ability is an option at Golden Palace. A separate box opens
up where you can also add customized notes.
The lower level games appear even looser than you would normally expect. The
number of preflop all-ins with any ace or any two suited cards over the
space of an hour was almost disturbing, until I took lots of their money
which eased the pain a little. One thing to be careful of though – at the
lower limits people will have absolutely no concept whatsoever of pot odds,
implied odds, number of outs etc. I know this is the case on most other
sites, but not to an extent that I have seen here. Don’t even think about
bluffing until you are at higher limits, it just does not work here. I would
expect that a long term player on the lower limits at Golden Palace would
see much higher variance and bad beats/suckouts than they would be used to.
Bankroll management should be carefully adhered to here.

Golden Palace Poker Bonuses and Promotions
GoldenPalace offers a “25% first deposit match” bonus (maximum $100).
There is no friend-referral bonus in place, nor any bad beat / royal flush
bonus.
You do earn action points whilst you play, which can be used to pay for
entrance in to tournaments or to buy merchandise from participating
companies (see their website for the most current list). You also need to
earn promotional action points in order to clear pending bonus amounts and
you cannot earn “normal” action points and “promotional” action points at
the same time, ie, whilst you are clearing a bonus, you will not also be
earning action points towards merchandise or tournament entries.
For each bonus dollar you need to earn 125 action points, and there is no
trickle feed or partial bonus payout – you have to clear the entire bonus
before receiving it. Action points are earned based on the amount of rake
you generate, but you do earn them even if you fold preflop – you just earn
more if you don’t! No clear exact calculations could be found on the site as
to how many points you earn based on the rake, but there is an up to date
point tracker in the “Help” menu which you can check regularly to see how
you are doing.
Golden Palace Poker offers e-mail customer support as well as live online
chat and a toll free phone number. E-mail queries are generally answered
quickly and accurately.
Golden Palace Poker uses 128-bit encryption, and according to the company,
“a range of other measures we can't disclose.” Golden Palace Poker considers
security its number one priority. Customer information is never sold and is
only used for operational, accounting, and security purposes.
The Cashier functions are easily accessible from the main lobby with a
single click. While the Cashier opens in the main lobby window, any
functions you access from within the Cashier (deposit, withdraw, etc.) open
in a new window.

Golden Palace Poker Software and Features:
The tables at Golden Palace Poker are very attractive and run
extremely fast. They offer short handed 6-seat table (which are very
popular) along with their 10-seat full table. The cards are big and
bold, making them easy to see if you are playing multiple tables (4
max). In fact, all of the colors at the table are vivid, from the
chips to the cards to the player avatars.
Speaking of avatars, Golden Palace Poker has stock pictures that
players can use to represent themselves at the table, but they have
to be some of the worst looking avatars in the industry. While the
look isn’t as “cartoonish” as Full Tilt, the avatars are definitely
silly looking. Fortunately, they aren’t really a distraction and can
be turned off.
As mentioned above, the game play is fast and smooth, although like
many online poker rooms it can get a little bogged down when playing
multiple tables. Overall, though, it is a very pleasant game
experience and it is easy to follow the action. The sound effects
are distinct and loud, also contributing to the solid poker
atmosphere.
A very handy feature is the mini table option: you can shrink the
table to ¼ size, which is nice if you are multi tabling or multi
tasking while playing. |

he main lobby at Golden Palace Poker is very clean and easy to
navigate through. For ring games, all the necessary information is
displayed: game type, stakes, average pot size, players/flop,
hands/hour, players per table and players waiting. You can sort each
column and there are filters to each main game category such
Fixed-Limit, No-Limit and Pot-Limit. Similarly, it is easy to sort
through the Sit-and-Go tournament and Multi Table tourney listings
to find open tables for the game you want.
The note-taking feature is excellent at Golden Palace Poker, and
while you can’t write as much as you want about a player, there is
plenty of room. The note window displays when you created the note
and when it was last updated, which helps you know if your notes are
still applicable on a player. Additionally, when the note window is
open, it lists all the players on which you have notes, so you can
flip through them, as well. You can even make your own custom notes,
not specific to any player, if you just want to remember something.
The chat feature works well, too, and can be detached from the table
window if you want it on the screen, yet out of the way.
Golden Palace Poker has a good hand history feature built in that
give you all the important action stats and money wagered as well.
This is of course very useful for the more serious poker players.
While it is not quite Poker Tracker, it provides the essentials for
some personal play analysis. |
